BREWFM Breeding Goals

Our BREWFM herd is a smaller Nigerian Dwarf Goat herd. Unbenounced to us, we started out with two very well bred does. In November of 2016, my husband bought two pregnant Nigerian Dwarf Does; Goldie, E K Farms Goldfinch, & Mockingbird, Ah-Misk-Farms Dark Mockingbird. This is how it all started. We attended our first Linear Appraisal in June of 2019. This is when we started breeding by the numbers. Since we were new to goats it seemed like the easiest way forward. We have stumbled & had to make heart wrenching decisions along the way. Our herd is improving. We hopefully have been breeding up but sometimes that is not the result one gets. We see pictures of these perfect show herds & wonder how. Of course the reallity is they aren't perfect but they are different than ours. Our herd is a work in progress & we have not been breeding specifically for show.

Over the last 10 years we have been slowly improving upon what we started with. It takes time to understand how breeding in your herd works. We can not stress this point enough. Every herd is unique, different genectics, different animal husbandry, differnt envionments. Breeding results will be different. It also is a very trial & error process when breeding bucks to you does. We use the following data to help us improve our goats.

We try to pair each doe with a buck that compliments and or improves on her. As a herd we are strong in Back, Rear Legs & Rump. We could use improvement in Head, Front Legs, Fore Udder & Udder Height. Of course each doe & buck will have individual stregnths & weaknesses that will need to be taken into consideration. Don't loose sight of the fact that bucks also need to be paired with does that improve on them, it seems this is often overlooked.

  • Temperment - Lapgoat Friendly Goats
  • Does w/Strong Maternal Instincts - We Dam Raise
  • Solid No Fuss Milking Does - Basic Feed & Forage
  • Structural Correctness - for Longevity
  • Genetic Diveristy - goal of under 4% 10 Generation COI

The tables below show the Bucks & Does we are currently breeding. For the bucks we have those we physically own and those popsicle bucks we own only a few straws of. As for the girls we will list our current breeding Does. We also list a few Refernece Bucks & Does from our herd. We have listed a bunch of stats for both. Keep in mind that this statistical information although correct is often not the full picture. How it is interpreted & what breeding choices you make in your herd is where the finesse is. The hard lesson is that no matter how great a buck or doe is they may not work in your herd. The bullet points below illustrate some of the nuances of using this data. The data is also not static, it is updated through out the year. One must always be checking for new & updated data.

  • Final Score Average for Type Evaluation. This can be skewed by the average age of daughters. Remember Does are evaluated based on a mature 4 year old doe. Scores are no longer adjusted for does below the age of four. A buck with young daughters being evaluated will likely have lower Final Scores.
  • Type Evaluation for Sires are nice, but it leaves out half of the genetics. Last I checked a dam contributes half too. I cross reference all a sire's daughter's dams. They may very well be getting their awesome scores from their Dam and not their Sire. I prefer to see a buck that has sired daughters in multiple herds. This in my opinion makes the data much more reliable. I do love the Type Eval as is can show a breeder that despite a negative or low ETA or PTI index that a sire is passing on desirable traits.
  • A sire's Type Eval may be skewed when bred to a does who have an extreme rating in a catagory. An example may be Rump in a herd of does that have Excellent or Very Good Rump Structural scores. This would equate to strong Rump Angle & Rump Width. The does offspring may all evaluate with E or V in rump. A sire will have daughters in this herd that have good Rump Angle & Rump Width, which he may not be reposnible for. This again is another reason not to overlook a Dam's Dam LA scores. It is also a good reason to get you buck evaluated, so he has Rump Angle & Rump Width scores to give a clearer picture.
  • Production Evaluations, PTI & ETA Indexes are correct. The main issue is not ALL daughters go on milk test every year or get an Linear Appraisal every two years. If they did then the statisics would have a reliabity that could not be questioned. ADGA should work to make milk testing more enticing for hobby herds.
  • Negative PTI & ETA Indexes...yes you should be aware but do your research. I have two *B bucks with negative ETA Indexes. They aquired them after I purchased them. Do I buy straws from bucks that have Negative PTI/ETA Indexes, Yes. The why is that I have been using my two negative scoring bucks successfully in my herd now for over six years. Would I have purchased them with the negatives, likely not. The why is because it is harder to breed them successfully. It is all in the statistics. I am getting much better & more consistant results with my buck with with a current ETA21: 125 & ETA12:62 rating.
  • PTI Ratings for a Doe who has never been on test. Yes this is possible and seems to be something that is increasing. E K FARMS GOLDFINCH & CAPRINOS ELLABELLA who I have owned, have never been on test. Yet both of them have PTI Ratings. I have called the ADGA, if there is enough relaiable data, yes a doe who has never been on test can be given a PTI Rating. To me it seems like if they have not been on test then it would be a ETA, otherwise it diminishes the value of the PTI. But what do I know, more on this later...
  • *B - When we started breeding, I thought it would help me find a quality buck. The reality is a *B alone does not make a great buck. It does not guarentee a buck will pass on great milking genetics. I currently think the *B should just be elminated, it does not tell you anything other than his dam earned her milking star. Let a buck earn a +B through his daughters & sons. Ultimalty what makes a buck great, are his daughters & sons accomplishments. And yes, this takes time but we can have bucks collected for the future use.
